Presvytera Stavroula  (Lula) Hondras passed away peacefully at her home on July 25th at the age of 98 years old. Presvytera Lu was the beloved wife of the late Rev. John Hondras who passed away in 1988. Presvytera Lu was born on May 16, 1922 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where she and Father John were married in 1942

Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! As we continue through the remainder of what has been a unique summer, it seems especially appropriate to express my gratitude and appreciation those who faithfully served our youth through this year’s Summer Reset Program.

New York, NY – On July 23, 2020, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros met with President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence at the White House on the concerns of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese over the seizure and re-conversion of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque.

Of course, I know that we are all still living in the era of COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore I wished to offer some some words of continued support.

My beloved, just as the Theotokos protected our Holy City many times before, when we chant the Akathist Hymn of the Fifth Week of Great Lent this coming Friday, July 24th, we chant it with the understanding that she will do so again, as long as we come before her Son with reverence and proper worship. Attached here, you will find the text of the Akathist Hymn, which will allow those viewing their parishes' live-streams to follow the order of the service.

His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios conducted a videoconference meeting with Metropolis of Atlanta Clergy on Tuesday morning, July 14th to review the current status of the Archdiocese Clergy Pension Program.

We, the Members of the Holy Eparchial Synod of Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, under the presidency of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, write to you in the power of the Holy Spirt in these anguished days when the Great Church of Christ, the Patriarchal Cathedral of Holy Wisdom, Ἁγία Σοφία, institutionalized for the past ninety years as a museum and world cultural monument, has been re-converted into a mosque. This egregious and unnecessary action has gravely wounded all Orthodox Christians, indeed all Christians around the world and all people of faith and good will.

While most of our churches have been open for almost two weeks (May 31st, 2020), many have not. As such, I encourage you to maintain safe social distancing measures, while adhering to the detailed safety guidelines.. Therefore, these measures are vital if we are to continue to practice the sacramental life, while also being mindful of the health of our newly re-opened communities.

Like so many of my fellow citizens, and indeed, others around the world, I also join them in expressing the extreme pain and outrage for the senseless death of George Floyd. In the week that has followed, our country has seen a time of great unrest, discussion, and serious contemplation about the future.

This past week we hosted conference calls via Zoom with all the parishes in our God protected Metropolis. I offer my sincere gratitude to all who participated in these meetings as they were very beneficial, not only for those who attended, but for myself as well. In those meetings, we were able to review, assess the regulations of each State and see how we can best celebrate our Church Services in each location. From our discussions, we received valuable information to share with all of you. 

Our society today is dealing with the pandemic of COVID-19, which is an infectious and deadly virus. We must consistently think about other people: relatives, co-workers, strangers--as well as ourselves, in order to create a safe society. In our great country, it is impossible for us all to be the same, for even the land, that we live in has mountains, valleys, small and large cities. Each place has different requirements and different rules to live by, for all to be safe...

Our Diakonia Retreat Center (DRC) is a  special place... Though I know how much we look forward to the opportunities that our DRC gives to all of us, I regret to inform you that, due to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the DRC shall remain closed until further notice.

For the past few months, Metropolises across the Archdiocese have been researching resources to bring Mental Health awareness to our youth. We have found a great resource in the American Red Cross, whose class Mental Health First Aid, has now added models about COVID- 19. The class is currently FREE and is accessible by clicking this post.

I come with important updates about our Metropolis of Atlanta's Coronavirus (COVID-19) protocols. Firstly, to both our Clergy and Laity, please accept my sincere congratulations for your devotion to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, and for your continued patience.
